Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my deck or fence needs staining?

Telltale signs include wood turning gray or silver, color that has faded, water soaking in instead of beading on the surface, a rough or splintering feel, and visible drying or cracking. New cedar fences also benefit from stain within the first season. If any boards or posts have already rotted, our carpentry repair team can replace them before staining.

What does the staining process involve?

We begin by cleaning the wood, removing dirt, mildew, and any old failing finish, often with a pressure wash. We let it dry fully, make any needed repairs, then apply quality stain that penetrates and seals the wood. We finish by checking coverage and cleaning the area. Proper drying time before and after staining is key to a lasting result.

What factors influence staining pricing?

The main drivers are the size of the deck or length of fence, the condition of the wood, how much cleaning or stripping is needed, the type of stain chosen, and whether any repairs are required first. Multi-level decks and railings add detail work too. We will scope the project and explain the pricing clearly. Get a free estimate here.

Should I stain or paint my cedar fence?

For cedar fences in our climate, stain is almost always the better choice. Paint tends to peel and crack when temperatures spike, while stain soaks into the wood and resists peeling as it weathers. Stain also lets the natural grain show through. Depending on the type, fences usually need resealing every two to three years to stay protected here.

How long does a staining project take?

Most fence and deck staining projects take one to a few days, depending on size and condition. Cleaning and any repairs come first, and the wood needs to dry before stain goes on. Weather matters too, since stain needs dry conditions to cure. We will give you a realistic window once we have seen the scope of the work.
